super grrrr to those animal rights activist groups.... seriously, that bomb threat at UCSD was so dumb. it really ticks me off that they would threaten the safety of so many people just to make a statement about how they're against animal research....not mention that its retarded to plant "fake bombs" near animal facilities.... tell me how it makes sense that they're going to "save" the animals by blowing them up? honestly, they need to think these kinds of things through before doing it... actually, i think that bomb threats in general are just retarded... majority of the time, they don't even have a real bomb... and you freaking KNOW you're gonna get in trouble for doing it....you KNOW they're going to find you....so wtf? why do it? you're an idiot for doing it... but seriously, back to the whole animal rights thing: here's what i think... 1) animal experimentation isn't always very nice....however, the results from the research are what's saving lives today. we can't just have theoretical research and then jump right into clinical trials for some kind of medical product. (for one, FDA would never ever allow that) because biology is so complex, it's necessary to be able to test things out on actual biological organisms to see what kind of result will arise...the theoretical results as predicted on paper or on a computer model are not always going to be the same as actual experimental results. 2) the research facilities that use animals for experimentation all have to follow strict guidelines according to the facility's animal protocol committe, as well as NIH guidelines. if they don't follow these guidelines, they can and most likely will be shut down. and these guidelines ensure that the animals are being treated as humanely as possible. 3) it's dumb for animal rights activists to threaten to set free all the animals being kept in research facilities. there are high chances that these animals are not healthy animals. especially in a laboratory that may be doing immunological studies. in one of my friend's laboratories, they study hepatitis C and cancer...meaning that the animals they use are affected by these diseases...i don't know about you, but i wouldn't want hep C infected mice running around anywhere....also, many of these animals are bred specifically for animal research, and thus may have some sort of genetic disorder specific to the study. releasing those animals to the wild would definitely disturb the natural population since there's an introduction of these genetically different animals. so yeah....here's just the point of view from someone who works in a lab. don't get me wrong. i like animals. and i do think they have a right to be treated humanely and with respect. which i do, when i work with them in the lab. but honestly, if you're going to be an animal rights activist, please...go somewhere like where people are pushing dogs to fight each other or something....not to a huge research university, where the research conducted is actually benefitting society. trust me, we don't just kill animals for fun...because that would be sick... |
